David Liittschwager at Cavallo Point

David Liittschwager is a local Bay Area photographer (and very nice guy) whose successful images are truly global - both in their content and their concerns. He's widely published and has shown in numerous galleries and museums. He has a new show up at Cavallo Point which looks to be fascinating. Cavallo Point is a resort just north of the Golden Gate bridge, and it is also one of our best clients - we'll post an explanation of the project we did with them soon.

David's show opening is this Thursday, the 11th of Feb. If you can make it, please use the link below to RSVP. The setting is really special and the food is always great. If you have not been out to Cavallo Point, go early and walk around. If you cannot make the opening, maybe make a weekend jaunt over the bridge and check it out. A drink in the bar after looking the work over is highly recommended.

Natalie Young - finally, some good dog portraits

We produced these books for photographer Natalie Young late last year. Had we been publishing this blog then, this would have been an immediate post. These are superb gift books for dog lovers in your life (I am a dog guy myself.) Sure - there are plenty of dog portraits out there. Actually, there are way too many. Most are poorly done, overly saturated, and anything but candid.

Natalie's work is intimate, well composed, and the lighting glistens on her subject's (mini dachshunds) beautiful coats. In short, these are good photographs she made quietly and for herself. Like many of the best books we have done, a book wasn't the goal; it came together on its own as quality images began to pile up and work together in a way that justified a solid edit.

I'm including images of the softcover version here - there is also a beautiful hardcover version on her site. Both are available for sale, and neither are too expensive. Again, consider them as gifts for the photo and non-photo people in your lives. The work is good and accessible.

Book Details:

60p - 25 images - printed on 162gsm paper
Softcover: 8.5" square with gloss laminated cover
Hardcover: 10.5" square with gray cloth cover, spine foil stamp, inset cover image.

Photo Alliance - Our World Portfolio Review

UPDATE:  The deadline for applications has been extended to Feb 19th!

We have a long-standing relationship with the San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit Photo Alliance. We've volunteered at their events for years and will soon print the catalog for their fourth annual portfolio review event, Our World. The organization itself is great for many reasons, but this event is especially rewarding.

The one-on-one time with well known artists and photo professionals is far greater than other reviews we've attended, and the atmosphere for this three day event is fun, intimate, and tasty (food is always really good at Photo Alliance gigs.)

Edition One prints a catalog for the event, and the catalog is special. Each participant has a two page spread and each gets to take one home of course. More importantly, each reviewer gets a complimentary copy as well - so these editors, art buyers, and curators are sure to have your work in front of them if you do this event. What is really special is that the catalogs are finished and delivered on the first day of the event - not weeks or months later. We know of no other portfolio review that delivers this type of service!

Applications are due by Feb 10th - 5 days from now. You can learn all about the event and get the application materials by clicking here.

Mexico City Agency - Shaktiprod

We're getting more and more commercial work these days. It is a welcome addition to our sample shelves. The files are usually prepared professionally, and the subject matter very diverse. My personal contacts and word of mouth drove our business for the first couple years. Since those contacts came from my MFA program and the local fine art photo scene, the bulk of our books have been by fine art and/or documentary photographers.

This book from Mexico City agency Shaktiprod came to us in December, and it is basically a showcase for their talent. The books were given to the agency's best clients as a holiday gift - a nice touch and pretty easy to do. Each photographer has a handful of pages highlighting their specialty. They chose our stock red cloth with a subtle silver foil stamp on the front. The book is understated and attractive. Inside, the sequence is broken up nicely with occasional white space and and some very purposeful use of across the gutter bleeds.

Our thanks to Adam Wiseman for sending us this project. Adam was the recipient of some complimentary books from Edition One last year, and is also one of Shaktiprod's photographers. Give and you shall receive...
